Some of us have good style and others have no style whatsoever, yet this still is a form of style. The guidlines, or lack there of, come from somewhere. Some influence. Over the next few posts I'll be offering up a few of my personal faves in the arena of personal style and lifestyle reading.

First up: COMPLEX (by Ecko and founder Marc Ecko).

With humble beginnings as a pure urban (read: hood) streetwear line Ecko has grown the hell up as a brand. Enough to transcend even it's own branding and marketing to put out a men's style mag showing the what-you-should-be-checking-for style of the moments. Bold considering many of the offerings are competitor brands. This says a lot about the brand's ability not only exist above the retail aspect and go on to lend it's own trend-prediction prowess to the greater good of all things "lifestylish". My word! I made it up. You can use it if you want though... just shoot the credit back here!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_PibYcRtNeO4/RsuoNnqor7I/AAAAAAAAABk/jbCqqzHOfV8/s320/Picture+1.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5101355954866794418" />

Visit COMPLEX

-Steve G. of the YP

My head about exploded...

... when I saw this vid yesterday. Kanye West has plugged straight into the "now" trend of Asian influence in media and global style trends that is sweeping the planet.

For the video "Stronger" from he new-release Graduation, Kanyeeezy has done a shot for shot recreation of the anime classic "Akira" (any conincidence that the anime cartoon movie has been playing off the hook lately?). I flipped out just seeing it which shows my complete geekdom, but it left me wondering a bit...

Is it a hot vid because he, like many who are far more ground-level in the Hip Hop community have been facinated and long supported many imports of Asian subculture (movies, anime, street style clothing trends). As a matter of fact, Hip Hop culture found a rebirth and second home in Japan and exploded back to us where it was born with a new adaptation and twist that has spawned huge growth in streetwear and, like this video proves, entertainment mediums.

OR... Sadly...
Is it just an attempt to strike a "hot iron" and piggy back a classic with hopes of tapping into an enormous sub-culture to get some of the overlap that exsists. I mean obviously I noticed it and my background is as street/hip hop as it gets.

You can be the judges, I'll just chalk it up to a study in global street culture, which is cool in and of itself to even say that something is truly global and we're not all that diff.

--Steve G. of the YP

Are you kidding me!? The next thing we do is just offer what we know to help fellow Creatives get a recharge.

Our own Steve G. or RDQ had the honor and opportunity to speak at the HOW Design Conference in the ATL (Atlanta, GA). The '07 edition of this great event was headquatered at te Hyatt Regency Hotel & Convention Center in downtown ATL. 4000+ designers and creative professionals converged upon "The A" in hopes of injecting a little bit of spark into their creative lives and careers.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_PibYcRtNeO4/RnqQgMEUwnI/AAAAAAAAABM/cjawfNidCR4/s320/DSC03359.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5078530412483232370" />

While proudly sporting a limited-edition YALE.PARK tee, Steve's topic of speak was "We Are Smarter Than Me", focusing on collaborative efforts and building an information resource within our existing and growing network. A little bit anxious as the room filled, our man figured "... it was like being at the coffee shop with a room of Creatives and just talking shop". Well, that would be one hell of a coffee house. As the room came to life during a real-time brainstorming session, the networking kicked in and the information flowed freely.

"It is my sincere hope that I could give something back to the group and the conference on the whole. Bryn, Sarah, Megan and the HOW staff have given me so much that I wanted to give something back".

The conference is over but the information is as fresh as a Georgia peach. Do NOT call it a phone...

... Oh but I will! I'll call it possibly the coolest collection of phones I've seen in a long time.

As a rabid mobile user (don't even have a home phone) I'm often looking for plans that fill my needs and phones that can utilize that plan of choice. With most carriers this is where the fork in the road shows up. You're faced with either a phone that is way too much for what you may be using it for, or a plan that makes your phone burst into flames every time you try to use plan features. On top of that many today, regardless of age, conduct business (both lifestyle and official) in different ways. With email, texting, picture messaging and more. I often find myself doing less talking on my mobile device but using it more.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_PibYcRtNeO4/Rhu5Y87I1eI/AAAAAAAAAAs/X4io9C6_P6w/s400/helio-web.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5051835245348312546" />

Enter HELIO Mobile. Now the concept is not altogether new. Other services like Boost and Amp'd provide similar services. HELIO is unique in that they are not pay-as-you-go making them a bit more tantalizing to mainstream users, not just youngsters. Their plan offerings are what they all "All-In" meaning that all of the niceties that most mainstream providers offer (web, txt, picture mail, etc...) are automatically included. The only cost you incur is plan minutes. Hmmmm... Interesting that such a plan can be offered. Also included is a very cool buddy beacon to peep where your pals are, direct connection to the MySpace community, juggernaut and GPS with Google Maps. That's a huge offering considering their target market is 18-32 yrs old.

The phones... er... mobile devices?! SWEEEEEEET! Sexy, sleek, modern and anything just short of a Star Trek communicator fancy! They rock, straight up. No other way to say it. Feature-rich media powerhouses to match the plans that are offered guarantying you get the most out of your user experience.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_PibYcRtNeO4/Rhu4H87I1bI/AAAAAAAAAAU/V3XnF1roQuo/s320/heat-phn.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5051833853778908594" /><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_PibYcRtNeO4/Rhu3787I1aI/AAAAAAAAAAM/C7VhGp6I_Rs/s320/drift-phn.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5051833647620478370" /><img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_PibYcRtNeO4/Rhu4SM7I1cI/AAAAAAAAAAc/XkDINjAWMsA/s320/ocean-phn.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5051834029872567746" />

The added icing on the cake is that Helio is a "borrower" in that they piggy-back Sprint's digital network. So why is it that a plan can't be devised for those on mainstream networks? Good question. The pitch is that the company is aimed at the young set of users who do more with their mobiles but as with most trend-spotting the youth market drives what the rest of consumers will soon see. I know a ton of ordinary suits that would clamor for this service provided that they begin to offer more "grown up" phones... oops I did it again didn't I?

(click any of the photos to zoom to Helio's website)

--Steve G.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://yalepark.blogspot.com/2007/04/helio-mobile-do-not-call-it-phone.html' title='HELIO Mobile. In some cases they pump oxygen, herbals and cleaner air while piping in music and television. Not the most plush, but damn cool design.

If you've seen the movie 'The 5th Element', director Luc Besson and his design team did a great job of including this futuristic take on space savings and efficiency.

YALE.PARK Street Crew Tees Available.

New YALE.PARK.COLLECTIVE Street Team tees are available from VNDK8. APT - NYC.

My girl Joy hit me in the mobile and said, "We're going to end the night at apartment." Now to most this would sound like a lame end to any night out. Ah, but this was no ordinary apartment. This was APT.

Imagine having the apartment of your big city dreams; a loft space with intimate hallways, cozy nooks and a cavernous main room complete with a stone balcony to boot. Include all the furnishings and fineries that take the palce from "cozy" to tipping the scales at "lush". That would be major, but that's not it. Throw in a finished lower level with a bar and security entrances. Riiiight. Now what would all of this cost you? A small cover and whatever you're eating or drinking.

APT is just that, a New York City lounge/club in the Meatpacking District known for the juxtaposition of warehouses and some of the trendiest nightspots in NYC. The door is classically understated, almost camouflaged, adding to the cool with a speak-easy, only the cool kids know type of vibe. Once inside I'm are greated by a staff that really makes me feel like you've stepped into a friend's house party so I oblige by exchanging names and conversation with them. Tara, the cutie at the door the the lower bar has a deadly smile and sense of humor to match so I chat for a bit to get the skinny on the downstairs party. I stroll down the candy-striped hallway leading to the living room lounge. It's like taking a deep breath and then "ahhhhhh" when you hit the end of the hall emptying into a low-lit auburn and plum room.

I take a seat with my crew around a table at the foot of a bed (yes a bed) and we commence to order libations. Our wait-staff member A.C., is a lanky young lady with a pension for dancing to the ambient beats while she waits for her orders to be filled. She slides over to me to ask what I might want as i joke with her, "Hey A.C., you cool like a fan?" "You know it baby. What can I get you?" Ah, that's the vibe all night, every night at APT.

My man Akalepse spins the illest mix of old soul and down-tempo beats that chill the room out, maintaining our ease, but I'm want to venture below to see what's the happs downstairs. The striped hallway acts as a warning track signaling that I am leaving the cool of the lounge as I hit the small lobby and run into Tara again and she gives me that smile and I make my way downstairs. I float right into Hip Hop heaven as the DJ is spinning just about every old school classic I could think of. The entire lower bar is buzzing with drinks and sounds as every head in the place nods on time and shouts the songs word for word as if this was school and we were reciting the Pleadge of Allegiance. From their the night was a euphoric blur.

4am: I find myself cooling in a stoop just outside the unmarked door. Tired, delightfully buzzed, and sharing laughs with my guys about the night that transpired. A swift cab ride to the Upper East Side and an easy grin etched on my mug tell all the story that need be told. "What did you do last night?" "Oh, I stayed at the APT all night, no big deal."

---
Steve G. of the YP

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://yalepark.blogspot.com/2006/09/staying-in-to-go-out-apt-nyc.html' title='Staying in to go out... Many times this is all smoke-n-mirrors; lots of flash with barely enough substance to make it viable. In the late 90's they gained in fashion and style but they lost a lot of hardcore athletic types.

Well you can scratch that. Nike is now taking that style and flair and moving to gain back the true athlete that the company was built for and gain popularity with inthe 70s and 80s.

At nike.com alongside and intertwined with their bells and whistles advertorials, they have very real, very accessible "training" mini-sites that allow the user to not only get real athletic training programs and videos, but also buy the clothing seen in action. And vise versa you can pick apparel and then see it go to work. Very nice, VERY nice.

I'm a hard-core Adidas convert myself, but as is the case with many of us Nike was my default almost at birth. A range of items from Walkmans and music to crumpled up job apps from mall. I never really outgrew that means of carrying, call it nostalgia or the fact that I'm still that kid no matter how you dress me up.

Enter O'GIO.

These packs are the sickest example of urban mobility and the need to have your stuff with you and not back at the flat. With a range of packs from backpacks to duffels they've got the spectrum covered and the years of research behind them. I remember having an O'GIO mobile locker pack that was seriously a moving gym locker. That was 11 years ago and I wish I still had it!

This is my current O'GIO 'Nyquist' pack. This rather pedestrian looking backpack can actually fit my entire mobile office allowing me absolute mobility, absolutely. Books, papers, magazines, my 15" laptop and every cable, mouse and wire I'd ever need is in there. But here's the magic; it never gets bulky and fits slim to the back.

So impressed am I that I just ordered my new O'GIO 'Hip Hop' messenger pack in 'punk rock black' for my pending trip to NYC.

Don't sleep on O'GIO! Almost ever barista storefront I've seen, both large and small, has a very independently tailored feel with close ties to art, music, and interior appointments. Small art galleries, music for sale, open-mic nights and great interior design are almost staples of even the most independent of coffee shops. Even those trying to play down to the "go local" crowd are stil TRYING and fashion a more indy atmosphere on purpose. Much like wine establishements, coffee has a culture to it that is more than just the drinks.

So on a recenet trip to the moderately-sized but surprisingly art and design-heavy town of Des Moines, IA I got the chance to speak to a local group of talented and fun area designers. on a walk-about after the talk I went to the office where a few of them work at Wells Fargo Financial (conveniently housing a branch of the Des Moines Museum of Modern Art!). I'm walking out and I notice a great piece of art in the form of a logo for The Bean Counter. Upon asking about the logo and the company, I find out that it's the independently operated in-house coffee shop for the company. Nice concept to have a captive supplier of the 'bean juice' for the captives.

The logo was fashioned by one of their own in-house design wizards, Craig Tassin. Lush soundscapes became his vocals and dreamy cinematic movements became the inspired rather than the background inspiration.

She (Tarsier) is an aural angel who begged her parents for instruments and lessons to be close to music. Born under the lights of movie studios in Culver City, CA, Rona Rapadas ironically found herself struck by the sound of the movies. That big, wide-open flow of sound used to tell stories. Little did she know that a man with a key to that particular lock was formulating a plan that would fit her needs. Tarsier garnered critical acclaim by coupling with a producer who could back her haunting voice. Healamonster was the first to "mash-up" with Tarsier forming Healamonster & Tarsier and relocating to Brooklyn, NY to do their work. Her vocal skills seemed to invite the need for collabortation.

Here is where the ball of dirt shrinks.

Tarsier had caught a glimpse of her future in the beats of Alias and very matter-of-factly sent him an email with a sincere and simple suggestion;

From: Rona
To: Anticon (Alias' record label)
Subject Vox with Alias

Hello.
This is Rona aka Tarsier, from the Brooklyn-based electronic duo Healamonster & Tarsier. I am loving Alias' album Muted and I am wondering if he would be interested in collaborating with me on a future track, or be open to me providing vocals for one of his tracks. I live in Brooklyn but we could trade beats and/or song structures and vocal MP3s via email.

(a actual email written by Rona "Tarsier" Rapadas, as read in URB Magazine Aug. '06 issue)

And with that, the oceans met.

The resulting tidal wash produced Alias & Tarsier and the cleverly titled "Oaklyn/Brookland" named in perfect homage of the combining of styles and coasts. I can't do the sound proper lip service, so I task you now... Listen and be so moved by a indie rapper gone savvy producer and a singer who literally begged to be heard.

Alias+Tarsier on MySpace

Anticon Records

---
Steve Gordon Jr.

Much more than a menu... Camaje.

My last visit to NYC was as all of my visits usually are, far more pedestrian native than awed tourist. I catch my cab to the UES (Upper East Side) of Manhattan, settle into my corner of my childhood friend's quaint little place, and then plot my park run for the next morning and grab my Metro Pass. Knowing how I move in the city that I call home more so than my own home town, my friend usually directs me to spots that offer a truer sense of local color.

One such place is the amazing little bistro located in the Village; Camaje.

From the corner of MacDougal and Houston the garnet-colored awning bearing the name gently inviting you to venture over and take a seat in the shade thusly being transported to a different place. Time moves a bit slower, and the atmosphere eases away the cares of the moment as if to prepare your mind and palette for what is to come. Seating is low in numbers and close in spacing but you never feel crowded. Sidewalk seating is available when weather permits. For those really in the mood to chill, there is a couch that looks and feels like everyone's favorite lived-in couch facing the wonderfully detailed fire-doors that when fully opened expose the interior to sidwalk and street. I suggest going with a friend because the ambiance at Camaje will incite good conversation and a genuine feeling of connection that all friends need to remember feeling. I did just such a thing, having been accomplanied by my good friend Joy. Upon arrival, we sit and lazily look over the menu because the vibe is so nice that we are in no rush. Our server (who also would eventually wear all hats short of cook) sat reading while still being quite attentive to us. This was nice because we felt no pressure to get a move on and we conversed with him about the perfect music piping into the spice-scented cafe from his own iPod. Another perk of a laid-back local spot; the help is most always mad cool. Enough swooning over the scene... Now onto the tastes.

The menu has continental twist on favorites with offerings like the Kobe beef burger, the chicken avacado panini and the wide range of not-your-typical garden salads. My personal fave is the chicken avacado panini and my own press of Oolong tea. Camaje also offers cooking classes as well as their famed "One Night Stand" endeavor in which you accompany award-winning chef and owner Abigail Hitchcock at the fires preparing a meal for yourself and up to 24 friends.

As a must-stop for me each time I'm in the City, I humbly submit that you should saunter dow the NYC's Village, get to the corner of MacDougal and Houston and look to your right... You see it? Yeah, go on in and find your new favortie spot. As the current unmatched keep for all things stylishly affordable, Target continues to show that good design is worth having and that designers are interested in getting their style into the hands of the wanting masses.

While blazing thru Target.com, I came upon a "mod" decor line with the hinted slick of Deco style tinted with current modern urban attitude. Independent Studies sports looks that belong anywhere from the most stylish of LA boutique hotels to the space-conscious East Coaster trying to make the most of their own personal HQ in the big city.

Rounded trapazoidal clocks adorned sparkling arrays of linear elements play up the current "glam" fashion standard on a classic canvas while polished metal lamps seem to drip with sexy shine.

With everything from desk clocks and wall art to bedding, Independent Studies is well worth the look, and the actual buying of a few pieces won't cost you much more.

http://www.target.com

---
Steve Gordon Jr.

On the Sneak; Adidas Rising Star Oddity

In 1984 Adidas release a revolutionary shoe in both fuction and material. The Rising Star was a stunning silver and fire red runner with an upper made of naturally water-resistant kangaroo leather and a foot hugging fit. But the real "special sauce" was the interchangable midsole pads meant to provide a custom fit; an unheard of innovation in '84 when most shoes were stuck using basic foam technology from the 70s.

Skip to 2005, and the limited re-release of the Rising Star. I copped a pair of the platinum runnies at the Adidas Originals Store in Chicago on Rush St. I was so stoked to have stumbled upon such a find that I immediately did some research to find out more about the shoe and it's story. That's when, a few months later, I found what I still think to be one of the most slept-on pair of kicks in the last two years. The maddening twist on the Rising Star; The Adidas Rising Star Oddity. Aptly named for its wild colorway that seems to match nothing (therefore matching about everything), this shoe is amazing! Still sporting a bit of the original silver-toned kangaroo leather under the black suade toe cap the rest of the colorway is a complete mash up of hyper-hued colors. Both the Rising Star and the RS Oddity were re-released in very exclusive limited quantities of just over 2000 pair world-wide.

Move ahead once again and we find the Rising Star LA '84 special edition popping up in collector circles. Though not as audacious as the RS-Oddity, the RS-LA'84 provides another sick variation

Most average shoe buyers won't feel these styles, but artists, Creatives and sneakerheads alike can appreciate the style, flair and unique twists on a rare classic that was itself a literal and figurative step ahead of the game. By the way... I own the first two pair. Special feels good.

You can cop these and many other fresh sneaks at my persoanl fave FTK Online

http://www.cmonwealth.com
(another very good online spyglass for the hotness in kicks.)

---
Steve Gordon Jr.

Welcome to "The Park"

After much deliberation and thought to what it means to be "creative", I have come to the conclusion that there is more to it than being artistically inclined or simply having a cool computer. The Creative Class is a fast growing section of society once thought to be the slacker kids of the vilified Gen-X set. Street-smart, quick-witted heads that either railed against conformity or simply didn't fit anywhere else. We didn't have a plan, and that was our plan. Instictive actions and thought processes and the ability to not only roll with the punches, but counter-punch in turn makes the Creative Class a viable force in today's world. We are headed for many of the same results and conclusions along the road but we relish the bumps and winding turns when compared to the wide, paved road of the masses.

I'll bet you know a "Creative". That gal at work who seems to get things done while not really sweating bullets. The kid in your 8 a.m. lecture with an amazing sense of style yet a 4.0 in Biology and couldn't point you in the direction of the Art college. That guy on the job who seems to come alive and actually thrive under the pressure rather than the daily march of the ants. The "suit" who is an avid climber and action sport freak in his downtime. The list goes on, but there in lies the point. Creatives are the future. the hybrid minds that are going to future-cast the timeline of social evolution during their own time. Artists with a talent for critical thought, poets with a pension for numbers, construction workers with supreme fashion sense. This is not a factual dissertation, just the opinion of a few people who have seen this new pathway start to take form.

So with that, the purpose of The Yale Park Collective is to offer a window into all things Creative in the humble opinions of our crew. From art to fashion, writing, design and creative though this is a simply sharing of the findings as tinted by our own places in the sub-culture of the Creatives Class. Stay tuned.

Welcome to Yale Park.
